Botswana: the model producer nation
Botswana's Jwaneng and Orapa mines, both operated by Debswana (50% De Beers Group, 50% Government of Botswana), account for approximately 70–80 percent of Botswana's total export earnings. The Debswana joint venture model, government partnership in production with revenues directed to national development, is widely cited as a successful template for resource-based development. Botswana's Human Development Index rank has improved dramatically since diamond production began, funded by diamond revenues invested in education, healthcare, and infrastructure (Debswana Annual Reports, debswana.com; World Bank Botswana country data).
Canada: certified provenance production
Canada's diamond mines, Ekati (opened 1998), Diavik (2003), and the now-closed Snap Lake and Victor mines, were opened and operated with complete environmental and social standards and were positioned from the beginning as "conflict-free" with full provenance documentation. Canadian diamonds carry government-issued certificates of Canadian origin, making them the most traceable large-scale production in the world. The Northwest Territories government has promoted Canadian diamonds in international markets as an ethical alternative (Natural Resources Canada, mining documentation; Northwest Territories government diamond marketing records).
Namibia: marine diamonds
Namibia's Debmarine operation recovers diamonds from the seabed off the Namibian coast, alluvial diamonds carried by ancient rivers to the continental shelf millions of years ago, where wave action has concentrated the highest-quality stones by removing lighter and lower-quality material. Marine Namibian diamonds are among the highest average quality of any production worldwide, the natural selection process produces an unusually high proportion of gem-quality, high-clarity stones. Debmarine operates a fleet of purpose-built mining vessels that vacuum seabed material and process it on board (Debmarine Namibia documentation; De Beers Group Annual Reports on Namibia marine operations).
